Today I'm thrilled to share with you all about a great new cloth diaper brand. Family-owned and based out of Canada, Hipkiddo Cloth Diapers offers an affordable cloth diapering option to help the average family switch to cloth. With an added emphasis on high quality at an amazing price, these diapers are sure to become your new favorite. Michelle is a SAHM of 2 kiddos, and is very professional, and has excellent customer service and communication.
I had the opportunity to review this fun, bright yellow Hipkiddo diaper. It's such a happy color! Like all Hipkiddo diapers, it's a one-size pocket diaper that should fit your child from birth to potty training age. It features a 100% Polyester Micro-fleece stay-dry inner layer, a convenient envelope pocket opening, 3 adjustable rise settings, 1 hip snap and 2 waist snaps on each tab, and includes a 3-layer Micro-Fiber insert with each diaper. They also feature an AMAZING price of only $8 each, or $7.50 if you buy 12 or more!
Since I've had the opportunity to try many, many brands and styles of cloth diapers over the last year, I can tell you that this is a fantastic pocket diaper! It's earned a place in my "regular" stash and is used every other day with my other favorites. It's very similar in design to Comfy Rumps, and has similar features to Fuzzibunz.
The inside 100% Polyester Micro-fleece inner lining is very soft and thick, especially for such an inexpensive diaper. It quickly wicks moisture away from the body and keep baby's skin nice and dry. The included 3-layer Micro-Fiber insert with each diaper is about an 1 1/2 inches shorter than my other micro-fiber inserts, and is quite a bit thinner overall. However, this just contributes further to the very trim fit of this diaper, and hasn't effected the absorbency in a negative way at all. Besides, if the inserts were any longer, they wouldn't lay flat inside a relaxed Hipkiddo diaper, and it'd be difficult to straighten it once your baby's laying on the new diaper. That's quite a pet peeve of mine, so it's nice to see that someone thought ahead during the designing process! The inserts are designed to last 3-4 hours between changes, and it's best to add an extra insert at night time. There's plenty of room in the pocket for 2 (maybe 3?) inserts at night!
I absolutely LOVE pocket diapers, for various reasons, but mostly for how easy it is to just stuff and go. The envelope opening of this diaper is particularly appealing. It doesn't have elastic around the opening so your hand can slide in and out with ease for stuffing and pulling inserts out before washing. This is why I also like my Fuzzibunz which have a similar opening. It's also great to not have to fuss around with a moving prefold or layers of AI2 inserts under a wiggly toddler! Pockets are just so easy and resemble the ease of disposable diapers the most too.
This is a one-size diaper, and there are 3 rows of snaps to adjust the rise according to the size of your baby. Just snap up one or two rows to make the diaper smaller, or keep the rise unsnapped for the largest rise. There are also 2 rows at the top of the front panel for the hip snaps and waist snaps.
The one hip snap on each tab is my favorite feature. What I love about hip snaps is that you can customize the leg fit independently from the waist sizing. Buddy is on the second to last hip snap setting for each leg, but instead of snapping the top set of snaps where they would naturally lay based on that, I actually go in one more snap setting on the top for a nice snug fit around the waist too.
This is also an awesome feature for babies that go through the Buddha-belly stage and get the extra baby chub in their mid-section for a while. You can keep the hip snaps where they need to be for snug legs, but go out a setting or two for the waist snaps if needed. This is one huge reason why Fuzzibunz have worked so well for us, and why Hipkiddo diapers are becoming a favorite of mine too! The hip snaps are also great in avoiding "wing droop". There's no way the front panel of this diaper can dip and sag because the hip snaps hold it all up!
Here is the smallest setting for rise and waist. This diaper gets really small, but since I don't have a newborn I can't really comment on the fit for a tiny little one. The waist snaps do overlap on one tab which you can see above. This is a really great feature so you don't have tabs hanging out everywhere when there isn't the overlapping snaps and yet you need a smaller waist.
This diaper definitely holds in the mess without red marks, and the insert absorbs great for the day, and naptime too! Most of you know I have a super soaker at night, so trying this diaper at night (or any cloth diaper for that matter) was out of the question. I'm even very picky about using just any diaper for naps. Based on how well this diaper works during the day and naps, I'm really thrilled with it's overall performance, and I'm sure it would be great for at least the average wetter at night too. Just remember to add a second insert at night!
Buddy is about 34 pounds right now, and still has lots of room in this diaper to grow. I am hoping he'll be potty training later this summer, but if not, he could easily gain another 5-6 pounds and be completely comfortable. That cannot be said about many one-size diapers! I actually have a few one-size brands that I had to stop using at around 28 pounds. Such a bummer! So, I'm excited my big kiddo has a great fitting diaper. Not only that but the materials in this diaper are high quality, and I expect the snaps to last for years to come. It's also super trim, and again, I love the hip snaps!!
Check out all these cute colors! Hipkiddo Cloth Diapers come in White, Green, Blue, Pink, Purple, Yellow, Orange, and Red. I'm hoping they'll come in prints at some point. They also offer wet bags in the same fun 8 colors and extra inserts for naps, night time, and heavy wetters.
It gets even better! Another awesome part about Hipkiddo is their support of a local organization called Stepping Stones. They are a Christian non-profit program full of great people who are investing in the lives of at risk youth and young parents. A portion of each diaper purchased helps meet the needs of these young people!
